need-stud-finder-for-plaster-walls

Need stud finder for plaster walls

I have an older house with plaster walls. I bought a Strait-Line deep scan stud finder. BEFORE I open the package, does anyone know if this will work or do you suggest something else? Thanks/Jina Jina, When trying to find studs in a plaster wall, studfinders won't help because it will do nothing but detect the wood lath that the plaster is adhered to. Depending on what your screwing into the wall, lath may be suffecient to screw in to. Nailing into lath might cause problems with cracking the plaster. Herm-I am hanging heavy (25 lb) mirrored shelves using wall anchors. Will this work? I REALLY appreciate your help. Jina If you have an electrical outlet on the wall its probably attached to stud. Remove the plate and determine which side of the box the stud is on; guess at center. measure 16 from there and you SHOULD be at the center of the next stud..... I've had very good success using a magnet. Just a plain ol' magnet. The reason being that the lathe is nailed to the studs, and the magnet (provided it's powerful enough) will locate the nails. Thanks for ALL your help! I do have a VERY strong magnet. I'll give it a try! Jina baseboard trim is usually nailed to the studs, if you can see the nails, you can plumb up with a level and you'll likely hit a stud. I vote for the magnet. You used to be able to find a magnetic stud finder, they were just little $2.00 or cheaper items. Small magnet on a swivel base and when you pass over a nail the magnet stood up, sorry kinda hard to explain. Check the local Menards, Lowes, etc..they might still have them.
