How to do venetian plaster

do Venetian Plaster

I would like to try the faux finishing or painting technique called Venetian Plaster. Can anyone tell me how difficult it is, or give me a good source of reference material to investigate it. Thanks. Hello welcome to the forums Might want to take a look at this page.do Venetian Plaster Hope that helps. It's not very difficult. But it certainly is time consuming. I just finished up a small 8 X 12 room and it took about 2 days for both coats. Think of it as painting with a putty knife. It does however look fantastic and it concealed all of the tiny little flaws in my old plaster walls. I even considered doing every room in my house with it. That was cost prohibitive though. Hey phillyguy, what product did you use and what color? Hi Jolee, Stay away from Behr venetian plaster YUCK!! it's just a thick paint-it has no transluescent qualities at all! The whole point of VP is to have a lot of movement and depth, but also have a perfectly flat, smooth surface when you are done. There are several companies that offer great vp's...find a professional supplier and purchase from them. I will send you the name of a couple of companies we use through your private e-mail. I used Behr that was a green base with whitish accents, I forget the actual color its called but they only offer a few. Although I don't have anything to compare it to, I was really happy with the results. Maybe I'll try a different brand for my next room and compare. Anyone know if sherwin williams carries it? Sherwin Williams carries Modern Masters brand venetian plaster. I've used it the past in a pinch, and like it MUCH better than Behr. BEWARE:Behr WILL wash off the wall (even after 6 months) if you do not seal it after burnishing. Shiny doesn't equal durable!!! Gotta reply to post by Mrs Fauxter. I used the Behr product as well as Sherwin Williams products. Both worked and I found that Behr was fine. After sanding a couple of times then burnishing with trowel, the surface was very flat and it reflected light great which is what I think you would want. It made the wall look like it had lots of texture but if you went and put your hand up to it, it was baby's bottom smooth. I think it's less the product and more the details of the manual labor that make the primary difference. Just wanted to chime here, I use Behr Venetian plaster everyday, and it works perfectly. We have never had any problem with it washing off. Personally, I did not like how the Modern Master brand performed, it seemed kinda dry looking. I have used Behr venetian plaster up to 20 coats, and you can see every layer and it's smooth as glass without sanding. For those who had problems with Behr venetian plaster they probably just did have enough experience when they tried it. We have over 200 pictures on or photo blog, showing just how well Behr venetian plaster looks. Jolee, I just want to clarify, Venetian plaster is a product not a technique. How difficult it is depends on the finish you are looking to achieve. As far as products go, personally, I only use the higher quality VP's. They have less synthetic materials added and are a lot easier to use, especially if I am going to do a highly polished finish. The downside is, the products are not available in any retail stores except for specialty decorative painting stores, and they are more expensive. The cost however makes up for the fact that you spend less time working with them and they are a lot more durable. if anyone else has any other questions regarding Venetian Plaster techniques, please begin a New Thread. this thread is now closed. thanks!
