Any Secrets for Spray Can Texture
I've done this twice now after fixing two holes with joint compound after moving lights around. The repair comes out perfect but I'm not blending the texture very good. The first time I taped off around the hole around and it didn't blend in well at all, the second time it came out a little better when I didn't tape around the hole and textured a bigger area than the hole. The third time is tonight and I would like this one to come out perfect... Any advise? I have never used spray can texture and have heard it can be a real bear to use. I suspect someone who has only used cans and never a hopper gun would get better results. You never want to tape off a repair for texture. Only tape off light fixtures, woodwork, etc.- what you don't want texture on. Basically you spray the texture heavy enough to texture the repair while lightly spraying the surrounding areas to make it blend in. I have done beautiful, almost undetectable can spray texture repairs that home centers sell, for doing wall orange peel texture and ceiling popcorn texture. Are you doing a wall or ceiling? Walls are easier and is more forgiving. The orange peel wall spray comes with 3 wands for courseness for desired texture. Experiment outside on some cardboard or a scrap piece of sheetrock or something. I have actually started out with the finer wand and then switched and applied the bigger wand over the top, to even better simulate the original orange peel texture. I prefer the oil base. They come in water or oil base. I get best results with the oil base. The stuff can really fly. You must tarp off the area. Possible mask off trim. Have plenty of paint thinner on hand to wipe spatters off of surrounding wood work right away! You can experiment with the wall spray but not the ceiling spray! The ceiling spray is very expensive and the can will empty in about 2 seconds! (for real!!!!) And at about $13 a can, this can be expensive for larger areas if you don't plan apply it, properly! You must plan your strategy in advance!!! The spray nozzle is flat one direction and you must orient the can in your hand so that you cause the flattest spray pattern to come out. The way I apply it is I hold the can about 18 inches away...take a deep breath...get ready, get set....GO!... and at the same time I spray, I am wisking the can in a forward direction over my head. I do this procedure in factional-second bursts. After the first spray-wisk attempt, I study the pattern deposited to see what I need to do to correct and/or add more where needed. You do NOT want to gob it on heavily, and this is (unfortunately) easy to do! That wisking motion I speak of is MOST important. With the orange peel wall spray you can actually just point it at the wall and shoot it off in short bursts, and just move along the wall area this way. But not with the ceiling spray!! which is under *extreme* pressure on purpose, otherwise the gravely texture could not be driven out of the slot in the spray head. And that is why even short duration sprays without wisking is no good. It simply comes out of the can too fast. You learn these things after awhile....the hard way. Tip: Buy more cans than what you need. Also, shake them all in advance! You could run into a bum can (I have.), and this way you abandon the bad can and simply use a new can. (Then tell them back at the home center to get a refund) You can always return what you don't use! I Have The Oil Base Orange Peel And Was Planning On Using It For The Ceiling. I Didn't Even Know They Made A Ceiling Spray. Will What I Have Work O.k For The Ceiling? Not if your ceilings are that popcorn texture. Describe the texture that is on there. Is it the same or different from the walls? Is it that real lumpy stuff where you almost worry about trying to paint it?...thinking the texture might come off with the painting action? If so, that is popcorn. If it is the same pebbly texture as the wall, then it is probably orange peel. IMO...those two types of spray textures sold in spray cans are a couple of pretty good inventions because with the results I have gotten,... look at the money I have saved from not having to hire some pro who is used to applying spray textures out of a hopper...the set up time, and all of that, that he would have to charge you for, just to do one little repair area. I have touched up many water damaged areas around bath fans that have had the popcorn texture, for one thing. And I have blended in wall repairs with orange peel where college guys have fought and put the other guys head through a wall, and had it come out so good that if I told you I repaired an area in that wall, and pointed in the general direction, I'd doubt you'd find it. I have also used the orange peel to wisk spray it over sanded out blemishes/scuffs in walls before repainting. Repair came out perfect!!! Except now I got to paint the whole ceiling to match the ceiling paint I bought from lowe's, Don't know where the original paint was bought or how old it is. Oh well, I think I have graduated to fixing any hole that might ever occur. Thanks for all your help DaVeBoy.
