Genie SP229
Anyone have an Owner's Manual for this opener? This is not Google. Just go on the Genie web site. I don't believe that is an actual model number Harry. Unless it is outside the US...which doesn't seem likely. Where did you get the number from? The model number should be on a label somewhere under the light cover or possibly under the main cover, should be a date of manufacture, serial number and an FCC label as well. Most newer ones just have a label near the adjustments on the back or side. Even a model like Pro 82 or Chainglide xx with an approx date of manufacture would be helpful. A call to Genie tech support might be helpful I don't think they will give general info/manuals on pre-1993 models as the Federal rules have changed, but if you have a specific question they might help. My reference to SP229 came from a label on the outside cover of the unit. Contacted Genie and this was their reply: The SP series of chain drive unit, SP99, SP129 and SP229, were sold from 1982-1989. Unfortunately, due to the length of time since these units were produced we no longer have most critical parts for them, nor do we still have the manuals available to provide to you. An earlier reply to this thread mentioned the Feds rules change which might have affected info for older units. Can anyone clarify the Feds change? Wow...thats an old unit...no wonder I couldn't find any reference. As to the rules change...in 1993 (I think) there was a Fed mandate that openers include certain types of protections to prevent crushing injuries, mostly to small children. IIRC it could be one of several different methods. Bottom edge force sensors, electronic down force circuits, or the sensor eyes. New residential models normally have the last two. Because of the rule changes they were inclined to not provide any assistance outside the warranty period and preferred you buy a new opener. Little something about the lawsuits they had to deal with. I'm inclined to agree with them. If you have any small children or pets, the newer openers are much much safer and have many features just not available back then. As I said earlier though...if it's a specific adjustment or operational issue issue they will normally give advice. That answer you got didn't come out of some tabbed reference book, it was probably written by a Senior Tech who has been working on these for 40 years. Genie is a good company.
