Plan For Potatoes

Planning the correct amount of potatoes eliminates waste.

Planning how many potatoes to serve at an event or even for a family dinner can be a challenge. It can be hard to tell how many to make, and the amount of potatoes also changes depending on whether the potatoes are a side item or the main dish, such as at a potato bar. Using simple math and portion sizes, you can determine how many potatoes to serve at any size gathering, whether you are serving baked potatoes, mashed potatoes or cut potatoes.

Instructions

1. Plan on about 1 cup of mashed potatoes for each person at the event. Medium-sized potatoes have about 1 cup of mashed flesh, so you would need about one potato per person. You can also add in a few extras just in case.

2. Plan about two medium-sized potatoes per person for a potato bar. You could also use one large potato instead, if the potatoes are larger than 1 lb.

3. Use a serving size of about 2/3 cup for side dish potatoes, such as French fries, sliced potatoes or potato salad. One medium potato per person is enough for this amount, or you could additionally use two or three small potatoes, weighing less than a 1/4 lb., per person.
