Roast Cumin Powder

Use a mortar and pestle to grind roasted cumin seeds into powder.

Chefs commonly add cumin powder to Thai and Indian recipes as well as Middle Eastern foods. If you want to use roasted cumin powder, you must first roast the cumin when it is still in seed form, as opposed to roasting it after it is crushed. Once roasted, you can finish preparing the cumin to make a powder out of it. You can then store the cumin in powder form or place it directly into a recipe.

Instructions

1. Add cumin seeds to the frying pan or skillet. Do not place anything else in the skillet, such as butter or oil, as they need to dry roast.

2. Place the skillet on the smallest burner on the stove. Turn the heat to low.

3. Swirl the cumin seeds around the pan with the cooking spoon as they cook. This helps flip them over to give them an even roast.

4. Remove the cumin seeds from heat as soon as you start to smell the cumin aroma. Their color will darken slightly. Let the cumin seeds cool off before moving on.

5. Dump the cumin seeds into the mortar. Crush them with the pestle until achieving a fine powder.
