Questions on DE Filter operation
I just bought a Proline DE filter and installed it. The operating instructions I got were not too helpful so: It talks about regenerating and some taking the DE cartridge out and rinsing it. Is backwashing a thing of the past? The directions caution not to run without DE for more than 5 minutes. Why not? What happens if I lose some and don't know it? When I took the cover off the lower resavoir the de powder comes out with the water, is this normal? I have other questions to, but I'll hold off. Thanks in advance for any help! Have you ever heard of Proline, and do you know of a website for them. I find Hayward every where but no Proline. I converted from cartridge to a Hayward DE system three years ago. I've said repeatedly that i would go back only with a gun to my head. Here's some partial info since our systems will have some differences. For the backwashing/regenerating, I think it depends on the way your control valve is configured. Also some DE systems have a provision for bumping that basically redistributes the existing powder for extending time between backwahing/recycling. My Hayward valve is basically service, backwash, bypass. Every three or four months I connect an extension pipe to the outlet on the valve and go into backwash mode. Out comes all the dirty DE powder. When the water runs clear I shut down and switch back to service. Then I switch back on and recharge the DE grids by dumping the powder into the skimmer cover (pool is about 10k gallons and I use three large coffee cans full for my particular filter model). Once a year or so the filter housing needs to be opened (pump off) and the DE grides disassembled for a thorough cleaning. The past two years all I did was hose down the grids in place, letting the water run out the drain plug at the bottom. This year I removed the grids and holder entirely for a really good cleaning. Had some pretty good caking of the de powder, so will probably do the complete disassembly annually. Not that hard; didn't have it apart for an hour. The reason not to run without powder is that the powder is meant to sit against the extremely fine mish on the grids and trap the dirt IN the De powder. Without the powder the dirt and junk will clog the DE grid fabric and be harder to clean. I only have one LARGE tank, but I assume that what you are describing as getting powder out is probably normal. Would be the equivelant of my removing the tank drain plug which is on the powder side of the grid fabric. Going to check a couple of links I have to see if I can find Proline; it's probably a subsidiary of something bigger. Hey thanks for the quick answer. I've been doing some surfing myself, and found that the proline is made 'exclusively' for NAMCO pools by Jacuzzi Brothers. It pretty much looks like their AW60. I think I said cartridge by mistake, this filter has grids. I don't have a backwash valve! I should have researched more before I bought, I usually do, but not this time. I have a regenerate pump handle, and no backwash abilities. Maybe I can modify it, there is plugged outlet at the bottom. The resevoir I was talking about is actually located at the inlet of the pump. The one with the strainer basket. I'm thinking I'll buy valve's for the inlet and return hose so I can stop the water flow when I need to service the pump/filter. I did some quick surfing and didn't see a thing on Proline. With no backwash provision I would guess you would need to go the drain and disassemble route to clean the old de from the grids and then reassemble and recharge.
