Eljer toilet flapper replacement
I recently bought a home and one of the toilets runs. It is an old Eljer toilet (no idea what model or anything) and the flapper does not make a tight seal. I bought a generic replacement from Home Depot but that did not work. A friend brought our old flapper to a hardware store and returned with another one they thought would work, and it worked for a few flushes but then stopped making a good seal too. I see a flapper on this site described as an Eljer replacement flapper: http://doityourself.com/store/6208904.htm -- my question is -- will this likely fit any Eljer toilet, or only certain models? At the bottom of the description it states: Replacement Flapper Eljer by Lavelle Industries For Eljer low profile toilets. Also fits Patrician Windsor and Canterbury Aqualine low profile toilets. - I doubt this will fit your toilet. Have you run your finger around the seating surface of the flapper? There may be deposits there that are preventing the flapper from sealing. Good luck. Could you post a picture of the original flapper
Unfortunately, I don't think we have the original anymore, as we've already replaced it twice. I have an Eljer Canterbury toilet and the ten year old flapper seal stopped working. I could not easily find a Eljer replacement flapper and generic ones did not work. I noticed that the seal on the flapper is a thin plastic collar. Gently lifting that collar revealed that it was sitting in a grove around the center of the flapper. I gently pulled the collar off the flapper and noticed that it was warped. I turned it over and reseated it in the grove. The flapper seal now works like new! To the OP, is your Eljer flush valve a white plastic bracket that's hinged to the side, and attached to it is a soft rubber bulb flapper? That's what I have in my 1977-vintage Eljer standard toilet. The hardware store stocks Eljer repair kits for the flush valve, and a generic rubber bulb seems to work fine too, providing you reuse the plastic hinge assembly. Like an earlier poster said, make sure the seat at the bottom of the tank is smooth and doesn't have any chips or deposits which would cause water to leak out.
