Soundproofing a bedroom door makes good sense, and helps everyone in a household get a better night's sleep. From babies and toddlers who need their naps to adults on different work schedules, household noise can interfere with good rest--and that can interfere with good health for your family. Learn soundproof a bedroom door and maintain peace in your household.
Instructions
1. Go into the bedroom, close the door, and listen to determine the level of sound that can be heard through the door. This is important; you do not want to waste effort on intense soundproofing techniques if it's not needed.
2. Measure the width of the bedroom door and purchase a door sweep seal that is the right length. Carefully attach the door sweep seal at the base of the door; this will seal the crack at the bottom but still allow you to open and close the door.
3. Purchase foam gasket tape that is slightly less than the width of the bedroom door jamb. Attach the foam tape around the inside perimeter of the door jamb. Again, be careful to ensure space for the bedroom door to open and close.
4. Attach an acoustical curtain to the bedroom door frame. You can screw curtain rod brackets into the door frame and hang the curtain from the curtain rod.
5. Attach a second acoustical curtain to the other side of the door for maximum soundproofing.
6. Go into the bedroom, close the door, and listen to outside noise. If the soundproofing is not good enough, move on to Step 7.
7. Measure the surface area of the bedroom door (width x height) and purchase a piece of acoustical foam mat that can be cut to fit the door. Carefully attach the adhesive-backed foam mat to the door, being careful to smooth out bubbles.
Tips Warnings
Measure twice, cut once.
Some door frames have no insulation under the molding. Remove one piece of molding to see if this is true, and if so, fill the empty space with insulation to reduce noise.
Always check the space in the door frame. Too much foam tape or a poorly placed bedroom door sweep seal can create a door that won't close.
