Adjust A Faucet Mixer Valve

The mixer valve determines the temperature of the water coming out of your tub spout.

Faucet mixer valves mix hot and cold water together to form a consistent temperature from your tub spout. The final temperature of the water depends on the temperature of the incoming hot water, and the temperature of the incoming cold water, since they are mixed together. In some homes, the hot is hotter and cold is colder, so many faucets are now adjustable. Changing the setting on the mixer valve results in hotter or colder maximum temperatures, depending on your climate and needs.

Instructions

1. Shut the water valves on the pipes leading to the faucet. Tub faucet valves are located in the shower wall, accessible by a panel. If there is no panel, just turn off the main water line. Sink faucet valves are located under the sink.

2. Take the handle to the faucet off by loosening the set screw on top of the handle and sliding it off. Some set screws are located along the side of the handle, others are under a cap on top of the handle. Remove the cap to gain access to the screw.

3. Remove the cover on the faucet and remove the bonnet by unscrewing it and pulling off, if you are not able to access the mixer adjustment dial. Use a pair of large pliers to take the bonnet off if it is stuck. On Delta monitor faucets for instance, leave the bonnet on to access the mixing valve.

4. Turn the dial on the mixing valve to the right or left to increase or decrease hot water. Most faucets have indicator marks showing which way to turn to increase the temperature.

5. Assemble the faucet by replacing the bonnet and cover and sliding the handle back on. Turn the water on and test the water by inserting a thermometer into the water flow from the spout. Repeat as necessary to achieve the proper water temperature.
