While Moen single handle lavatory faucets enjoy a good reputation as a quality product, environment and age can cause problems such as leaking, fluctuations in water pressure, and worn or broken handles. A lifetime warranty covers parts required to repair a leak or drip, and a replaceable cartridge makes easy work of water pressure problems. Armed with a screwdriver and a little knowledge, even a novice can successfully repair a Moen single handle lavatory faucet.
Leaking or Dripping Faucet
Moen single handle lavatory faucets use a one-piece cartridge system in place of washers or springs to guard against leaks and drips. While designed to last a lifetime, if your faucet should develop a leak or drip, start by removing and cleaning the cartridge.
Cartridge removal is a simple matter of exposing and pulling out the old cartridge. Before getting started, turn off both water valves underneath the sink and allow the water to run until the line is clear. Using a screwdriver, gently pry off the cap on the lever of the faucet handle to expose the cartridge. Remove the U-shaped retaining clip that holds the cartridge in place and pull the cartridge out. If dirt or residue makes removal difficult, use a Moen cartridge puller to assist you. A cartridge puller fits over the cartridge and gives you greater pulling power.
Soak the dirty cartridge in vinegar for four hours and replace.
If cleaning the cartridge does not work, call the Moen Helpline at 1-800-465-6636 or Customer Service at 1-800-465-6130 to order a free replacement. Locate the part number on the cover page of your instruction manual. If you no longer have the manual, look on the underside of the spout.
Low Water Pressure
Water pressure problems usually occur due to a worn or dirty aerator. Moen aerators have very small brass washers inside so close the sink drain prior to removal to prevent them from falling down the drain.
Locate the aerator under the mouth of the faucet, unscrew and inspect for wear and dirt. If worn, replace with a new Moen aerator. To clean the aerator, soak it in a lime scale or rust remover and clean with an old toothbrush. Screw in the new aerator to replace.
Broken Handle
A broken handle can mean anything from a handle that will not close all the way to one that will not move at all. Moen single handle lavatory faucets have a one-piece construction design that makes replacement as easy as changing a cartridge.
Use an Allen wrench to loosen the screws holding the faucet handle in place. Look for the screw on the underside of the handle or under the cap on the lever of the faucet handle. Once you remove the screws, gently pry the handle away from the sink with a screwdriver and pull the handle off. Replace with a new handle and screw in.
Turn water back on.
