Homemade Gag Gift Crafts

Homemade gag gifts are a crafty alternative to April Fool's Day pranks.

The only thing more fun than giving gag gifts is making them from scratch. Gag gift craft projects are inexpensive, funny and easy to do. Homemade gag gifts allow you to tweak and customize items so that they are tailored to suit the victim. Even if you don't intend on giving them as presents, gag gift crafts are still fun to create and share for a couple of laughs. Turn craft time into laugh time with practical joke craft projects.

Edible Gag Gifts

Few things are funnier than the look on someone's face when he tastes something unexpected. Make your own spicy gum by combining 1/3 cup gum base, 3 teaspoon corn syrup, 1 teaspoon glycerin, ½ teaspoon citric acid and a heaping teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Combine ingredients and melt in the microwave. Knead in a mound of powdered sugar for 15 minutes or until firm, roll and cut into pieces or strips. For an easier gag gift craft project, replace wine with grape juice and carefully re-cork, or create a box of sushi out of rice crispy treats, Swedish fish candy and fruit roll-up strips for garnish.

Funny Novelty Gifts

Making silly, novelty gag gifts is easier and cheaper than you might think. Make a package of doughnut seeds by placing circle oat cereal in a small zip lock bag. Decorate the bag to resemble a brand or product packaging. Make a melted snowman by filling a jar with water, coal pieces, a pipe and a small carrot. Or, make a Super Hard Expert Jigsaw Puzzle by painting a cardboard box to resemble a puzzle photo, and filling it with sawdust and cardboard shavings.

Humorous Books and Posters

Photo editing software makes making gag gifts easier than ever. Take a digital photo of your intended victim, and photo shop it so that the individual is super muscular, the opposite gender, a member of the clergy or wearing a superhero outfit, to start with a few ideas. Craft a book about this character, or design and print a silly movie poster or advertisement around the enlarged photo.

Gag Trophies

Phony trophies are a classic gag gift. To make a personalized gag trophy, buy a generic, plastic trophy from a dollar store or teacher supply store. Paint or foil a piece of cardboard to resemble an engraved metal plate, inscribe it with a humorous award or title, and affix it to the trophy base. Replace the trophy figure with brown putty or fake poop and inscribe it to the World's Crappiest Friend, or paint an appalled face onto the trophy figure and inscribe the plate with Most Offensive Odor.
