Homemade Muesli Cereal

Homemade muesli is an alternative to oatmeal or granola.

Muesli is a type of breakfast cereal made from a variety of whole grains, nuts and dried fruits. This easy-to-make cereal is similar to granola and a healthy alternative to regular cereal or hot oatmeal. Muesli can be eaten with warm or cold milk, mixed into yogurt or sprinkled over ice cream. You can vary the flavor of homemade muesli by adding different types of nuts and dried fruits.

Instructions

1. Pour the quick oats, rice bran, bran flakes and wheat bran into a mixing bowl. Stir the four grains together until blended well.

2. Sunflower seeds add a nutty flavor to muesli.

Add the raw sunflower seeds and sliced almonds to the grain blend. This combination gives your muesli a nutty flavor. It also provides protein to fill you up and give you energy.

3. Stir in 1/2-cup shredded coconut and 2-tsp. ground cinnamon. Mix all the dry ingredients well with your wooden spoon.

4. Honey and orange juice sweeten your muesli cereal.

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Pour the honey and orange juice into a small, microwavable bowl and warm the two ingredients in the microwave for 30-to-40 seconds. Drizzle the honey and orange juice over the dry ingredients. Stir well with a spoon.

5. Cover a cookie sheet with wax paper. Spread the muesli mixture in a layer over the cookie sheet. Bake the muesli ingredients in the oven for 25 minutes. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven and allow the muesli to cool completely.

6. Dried fruits add a chewy texture and sweetness to muesli.

Dump the baked muesli ingredients back into your mixing bowl. Add the dried cranberries, raisins and apricots to the muesli. Stir the ingredients to blend. Place your muesli cereal in an airtight container for storage.
