Make Ovenbaked Fries

Serve fries as a side dish with any meal.

Try making oven-baked fries if you are tired of frozen store-bought fries or fast-food fries. A healthy alternative, homemade oven-baked fries, also called steak fries, are cooked in the oven rather than in a fryer. Fries cooked in a fryer absorb fatty oils, resulting in a higher calorie count. Oven-baked fries do not take long to prep. Simply wash, cut and season the potatoes before placing them into the oven to bake.

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray two large cookie sheets or two 15 1/2-inch-by-10 1/2-inch jelly roll pans with nonstick cooking spray.

2. Scrub 2 lbs. unpeeled potatoes (about four medium-sized potatoes) under cold running water to remove any dirt or impurities.

3. Cut each potato in half lengthwise. Place each half flat side down and then cut lengthwise, creating 1/4-inch-wide slices. Cut each slice lengthwise again, making 1/8-inch-wide sticks.

4. Place potato sticks in a large bowl and toss them with about 1/2 tsp. salt and pepper. Add any other desired seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder or thyme. Divide the potatoes evenly between the two sprayed baking pans.

5. Put one baking pan on the lower oven rack and one on the upper rack. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the fries are tender and golden brown. Use a spatula to turn the fries halfway through the baking time and rotate the pans on the racks.
