How Does a Pea Grow?
Conditions
There are certain conditions that need to be achieved in order for peas to grow. They need cooler temperatures of no more than 70 degrees F, as warmer temperatures will impeded the pods' growth. The soil must be well dug and of a moderate texture, meaning that it's not too hard or too soft. Peas also need moisture and nitrogen to grow, so they must be planted away from walls, fences and other objects that can disrupt the pods' growth or prevent the roots from extracting nitrogen from the air. Pea pods also enjoy the sun, although one must ensure that the temperature remains cool both in the sun and shade.
Planting
Depending on the type of pea, most peas will take 12 to 15 weeks to grow. The planting, or sowing, of the peas should take place between March and June, when temperatures are still moderate but are warming. Harvest usually takes place between June or July if the peas were sowed in March or September or October if they were sowed in June. When digging a hole for the plant, be sure to dig at least the length of a spade, which is usually six inches or so, because the plant's roots grow rather deep. Bonemeal can be added to the soil if the soil is of poor quality. Peat can also be added to introduce the plants to extra nitrogen.
Care
Pea plants must have water, so be sure to moisturize the plant whenever the soil looks dry. Mulch can also keep the plant moist while keeping weeds away. Tall twigs or sticks need to be placed near the plant to allow it to climb. The peas will continue to grow in their pods as long as they have access to nitrogen. Peas feed off of the nitrogen, which they can extract from oxygen in the air and soil. Harvest the peas slightly before the pods fully harden. This allows them to maintain their sweetness. Harvest the bottom of the pods first. This encourages growth. When pods stop forming, cut the top part of the plant off, but leave the roots in tact so that the process can start again in May or June.
