Old-fashioned high tank toilet?
For some reason I gave up my idea of getting a tank-on-the-wall, pull chain toilet years ago and now I'm thinking of it again. A website has either oak or porcelain tanks and one tank plus hardware you can use with an existing toilet that costs more than the complete toilets. Is there a downside to getting one of these? Do they work better/worse/same as older regular toilets or low flush ones? If I decide to get one, what should I look for or avoid? Is there a particular place to buy them that has especially good quality or low price? Is a plastic tank liner a bad idea? We've been wanting one of those toilets too. We're building a new house and are installing a high tank toilet. We bought it thru Menards for about $350 for toilet, oak tank w/ liner, oak toilet seat, and all plumbing pipes. It looks very nice. It's not installed yet, so I can't say how it works. I'm hoping it works okay because we'll be really sad it we've wasted all this money and time. Barb $350! The ones I saw on the Internet start around $700. Most are in the $800s and up. Menards' website doesn't indicated that they have a mail order business, but I could try. I hope the toilet works out. If you install it any time soon, please post whether you're glad you bought it. I went to my Menards store. The clerk looked thru their supplier catalogs until we found what we wanted. The supplier name is Foremost Industries. If you don't have Menards near you, maybe check at other stores. They all have suppy catalogs for special orders. I was also able to buy all the plumbing fixtures from Menards that we needed for the clawfoot tub we are refinishing. We should be putting the bathroom together in a couple of weeks -- we hope. I will check some of my plumbing dealers and see if i can find a good source.I have installed and worked on 7 or 8 of these units. They were furnish by the home owner through mail order. The ones i have encountered did not have standred internal works. Some parts the same but, most of the guides were different.Could not get parts except for one the owner contacted the company 4 weeks before part came. The others owners could not remember were they got them.So remember down the road 5 to 10 years were do you get repair parts. Most i had to fabricate. So be prepard down he road to spend more and wait more when there is a problem.I will add that they do look good Hmmm, I never thought about the parts being difficult to get. What about the difference in liners--plastic inside the wood v porcelain and no wood? I would go with porcelain. The liners break down over time with the chlorine in city water.I know they say they are chlorine resistant but, nothing is chlorine resistant over time. The liner will become brittle and crack. Also over time voids will occur between liner and wood causing condensation in between and wood will start to discolor.Ever see your toilet tank sweat some times with little beads of water?Usally in winter when warm inside and cold water coming in.I would get the porcelain one with total rebuild kit make sure you keep all paper work.I'am not trying to talk you out of anything just letting you know what to expect in the future. I wouldn't mind being talked out of something that isn't a good idea to begin with. When I talked to somebody at one of the mail order houses, she said they're all of equal quality, but I didn't get the idea she actually knew more than I did.
