Prepare A Bamboo Steamer

Stacked bamboo baskets let you cook several different foods at once. The shape of a bamboo steamer allows you to fit it into a wok of boiling water. Unlike metal utensils, the wooden construction of these steamers does not rust or corrode, but to ensure its long life you must take special care of your steamer and prepare it properly for use.

Instructions

1. Wash all of the parts of your bamboo steamer with hot, soapy water. Rinse well but do not allow the steamer to sit in water.

2. Place the bamboo steamer in a wok or saute pan and add water to below the bottom level of the steamer.

3. Remove the steamer and place the wok or saute pan over high heat to bring the water to a boil.

4. Place the food onto the bamboo steamer (at each level if desired). For easier cleaning, line each of the layers with a round of parchment paper, lettuce leaves, banana leaves, corn husks or a ceramic plate and place the food on top. Ensure that air still can circulate around the lining material.

5. Set the bamboo steamer into the boiling water and steam the food for the time prescribed in the recipe.

6. Remove the cooked food from the steamer and allow the bamboo to cool.

7. Wash in soap and water and air dry before storing to prevent mold formation.
