Make Easy Cranberry Sauce

Make an easy cranberry sauce recipe using fresh fruit.

Homemade cranberry sauce is the perfect accompaniment to a holiday dinner. If you make too much sauce, it can easily be stored in the refrigerator or freezer for later use. The fresh sauce also makes a flavorful sandwich condiment or dessert ingredient. You can use either fresh or frozen cranberries to make the taste-tempting sauce, which features a sweet and tart flavor profile. Adding creative ingredients will allow you to create a customized sauce.

Instructions

1. Rinse one cup of fresh cranberries with water or open one 12-oz. package of frozen cranberries; you don't need to thaw the berries prior to making the sauce.

2. Pour one cup of cool, clean water and one cup of white granulated sugar into a medium-size saucepan. Bring the water and sugar mixture to a boil. Stir the mixture frequently with a spoon to dissolve the sugar.

3. Add the cranberries to the boiling sugar water and stir. Return the mixture to a boil.

4. Reduce the heat to low. Simmer the cranberry mixture for 10 minutes or until the berries break open.

5. Add complementary ingredients to the cranberry mixture to enhance the flavor of the sauce if you desire. Stir in a cup of raisins or currants, or mix in half a cup of chopped walnuts. Sprinkle in ground cinnamon or nutmeg to give the sauce a spicy flavor.

6. Remove the saucepan from the stove burner and stir the cranberry sauce. Transfer the sauce to a glass bowl and allow it to sit at room temperature until it is completely cool. Cover the bowl with an air-tight lid or a sheet of plastic wrap and store it in a refrigerator until it is ready to eat.
