Fruit Ideas For Birthday Parties

Fresh fruit is a color-filled addition to any party menu.

If you're in charge of organizing a birthday party for a loved one, it's important that the food is just as impressive as the decorations and event's activities. Add a colorful and healthy twist to the party fare by serving fruit in a tasty and inventive way that will keep guests talking--even after the party.

Fruity Jello Desserts

Purchase Jello in your little girl's favorite flavors, as well as fresh fruit that matches the Jello colors, e.g. tangerines for orange Jello, cherries for red Jello. Add the fruit to the Jello mix before while the Jello is still liquid, so the fruit will become part of the dessert mold. Pour the Jello mixture into tiny Bundt pans, or let the Jello become solid in a baking pan, so you can use cookie cutters to cut the fruity molds into shapes like hearts, stars, or your little girl's first initial. Or, create Jello fruit parfaits, which are fitting for a preteen or adolescent birthday party. Use tall, cylinder-shaped glasses for the dessert, and fill each glass with layers of Jello pudding, "matching" fresh fruit, e.g. bananas for yellow vanilla pudding, and tasty accents like granola or shredded coconut.

Basket Made of Fruit

A large fruit like a watermelon or cantaloupe can serve as the "basket" for the rest of the party's fruit fare. Cut the melon in half and scoop the fruit out of each side with a melon baller to create two fruit baskets. Customize the basket for the party by carving the birthday boy's initials into the melon, or tying a ribbon around the melon in the birthday girl's favorite color. Add other fruit to the melon basket like fresh berries, grapes, and pineapple wedges. You can also request a carved fruit basket from your local caterer for the birthday party, and specify the fruits you want featured inside this edible centerpiece.

Fruity Alcoholic Beverages

Make your best friend's birthday party even more enjoyable with some cocktails that feature bold fruity flavors. Prepare a pitcher of sangria, a Latin wine-based drink, with red and white wine, mineral water, white grape juice, and slices of peach, pear, and grapes -- this sweet drink pairs well with a cheese tray that includes Pepper Jack or Gargonzola. Or, feature a drink that includes the birthday girl's favorite flavors, and fits the season. For instance, a pomegranate cocktail with apple cider is ideal for a fall birthday party; flavors like peppercorns, apple brandy, and cinnamon will give the beverage a warm and pleasantly sweet taste.

Fruit Fondue

A fondue that is just right for fruit dipping is perfect for an intimate birthday party. Place a large pot of chocolate, butterscotch, or white chocolate fondue in the center of the table, along with an assortment of skewers displaying apple squares, halved strawberries, pear or banana slices, and pineapple wedges for guests to dip into the sweet mixture. Or, prepare small ceramic bowls of the mixture of your choice so that each guest can dip their fruit into the fondue separately. It's also a good idea to include some cubes of birthday cake on the fruit tray so that guests can taste the main party dessert accented with the fondue flavors.
