Keep My Spaghetti From Sticking Together
Spaghetti is a glutenous Italian noodle used often in combination with tomato sauce and meatballs. Most people do not make spaghetti from scratch, but rather buy it in packages pre-made and then boil it in water. Because it is a starchy food, spaghetti can become quite sticky. Sometimes the noodles can become so sticky that they adhere to each other. This can create clumps of pasta and negatively affect an otherwise tasty dish.
Instructions
1. Fill a pot with cold water. Use 1 quart of water for every 4 ounces of dry pasta you are preparing. Place the pot on the stove.
2. Turn the stove on high. Cover the pot with a lid to bring the water to a fast boil.
3. Add salt to the water once it comes to a boil. You should add about 2 tbsp. for every pound of pasta you are using.
4. Wait for the water to come to a full boil after the addition of the salt. If you add the pasta before the water returns to a full boil, the spaghetti is likely to stick together. This is because the starch in the pasta will break down and become sticky. The boiling water prevents this by keeping the water hot enough to prevent the starch from breaking down.
5. Add the pasta all at once.
6. Stir the pasta with your spoon for the first 1 to 2 minutes. This will also help keep it from sticking together.
7. Cook the pasta for about 8 to 12 minutes.
8. Drain immediately once finished. Add sauce once all water is drained. This, too, will help prevent the pasta from sticking to itself.
