Cook Steel Cut Oats In A Crockpot

Steel-cut oats make a wholesome and filling breakfast.

Steel-cut oats, which are not processed and rolled like fast-cooking oatmeal, are high in protein and fiber and have a slightly chewy texture. If you prefer steel-cut oats to rolled oatmeal but don't want to stand over a pot stirring for a long period of time, prepare the oats in a Crock-Pot instead. The oats will take several hours to cook in the Crock-Pot, so plan ahead and start to prepare them before you go to bed.

Instructions

1. Add one cup of steel-cut oats, 4 1/2 cups of water, 1/2 tsp. of salt and three tbsp. of butter to a two or 2.5 quart Crock-Pot. Include a 1/2 cup of dried fruit or nuts, such as apricots, raisins, walnuts or almonds, if you desire.

2. Stir the ingredients with a spoon and place the lid on the Crock-Pot. Turn the appliance on to "low."

3. Cook the steel-cut oats for six to eight hours. Check the oats occasionally and stir them if a crust begins to form around the sides of the Crock-Pot.

4. Serve the prepared oats with your favorite mix-ins and toppings, such as sugar, honey, fresh fruit, milk or cinnamon.
