Potato Topper Ideas

If you're sick of the same old butter and sour cream potato toppings, try some tasty alternatives.

You've likely heard this one before: "It's not the potato that's unhealthy, it's all the stuff you put on it." True enough. But sometimes, you just have to treat yourself to some of that "stuff." The potato is like an edible canvas: you can put just about anything you want on it and the creative possibilities are endless. And, those potato toppers can be healthy, too.

Spicy Southwest

Kick up any baked potato with a little Latin spice by topping a potato half with chili (canned or homemade) or carne asada (thin cuts of meat, marinated with Mexican spices and grilled), plus green chilies, finely chopped onion, taco sauce, sour cream and shredded cheeses of your choice (Monterey jack and cheddar work well). If you're looking for a vegetarian twist, substitute the chili or meat with vegetarian chili, refried beans or the stewed bean of your choice.

Meditteranean Flare

Here's a healthy twist on a baked potato topping with delicious Greek flavor: Mix 1 cup of chopped cucumber, 1/2 cup of feta cheese and onions and olives to taste. Feel free to add other chopped vegetables, such as celery or red pepper. Toss all the ingredients with olive oil and vinegar, then spoon the mixture over your baked potato halves.

Philly Cheesesteak Heaven

If you're craving some Philly cheesesteak flavor without the giant size, try this baked potato topper: Grill some cuts of sirloin steak or another thinly sliced steak, while sauteeing peppers, mushrooms and onions in another pan. When the veggies are soft and the steak is your desired doneness, top your baked potatoes with the steak, veggies and a slice of provolone cheese. The cheese will melt nicely over the hot ingredients.

Margherita Potato Pizza

Instead of a doughy crust, this pizza uses a potato. Top your potato with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, chopped tomatoes and fresh basil. Stick the potato under the broiler for a couple of minutes to melt the cheese. When finished, drizzle lightly with olive oil.
