Make Holiday Sausage Balls from Scratch

Roll up your sleeves and get ready to bake. These hot-from-the-oven, melt-in-your-mouth sausage balls are bursting with luscious sausage bits and melted cheddar cheese. Whether served as an appetizer for holiday gatherings or as a breakfast side dish, these tender, mouth-watering sausage balls are sure to please everyone on your holiday list. Tis' the season to enjoy home baked goodness straight from the oven.

Instructions

1. Brown the sausage in the skillet over medium high heat for approximately 10 minutes until lightly golden brown. Do not drain.

2. Use the spatula to break the cooked sausage into small pieces. Set aside to cool

3. Place 6 cups of self rising flour into a large mixing bowl. With cleanly washed hands, place 1/2 stick cold butter into flour and break the butter into tiny pieces. Grind the butter into the flour until no more pieces of butter can be felt. A pastry cutter can be used if desired.

4. Wash hands with warm soap and water and pat dry.

5. Add 2 tsps. of garlic salt to the flour mixture.

6. Add 4 cups of finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese to the flour mixture. Stir mixture with a fork for approximately 20 seconds. Make sure all of the ingredients are well blended.

7. Pour the crumbled sausage into the flour mixture.

8. Add two cups of milk.

9. Stir the flour mixture with a fork until the mixture begins to form a ball. If the mixture is dry, gradually add the rest of the milk, up to one additional cup. The mixture should be slightly wet and dough-like, but not sticky.

10. Dust dough with a small handful of flour until the dough can be lifted out of the mixing bowl by hand. This may require handling the dough a bit, turning it with floured hands. Continue to lightly flour the dough ball until it is no longer sticky, but smooth and round.

11. Lightly spray the cookie sheet or baking stone with a non-stick cooking spray.

12. Pinch off a 1" piece of the dough mixture and roll it into a ball. Place the sausage ball on the cookie sheet or baking stone. Continue to make sausage balls, spacing them 1" apart on the baking stone or cookie sheet.

13. Bake sausage balls in a 400-degree oven for approximately 20 minutes or until golden brown.

14. Melt 1/2 cup butter in microwave in a small microwave safe dish or cup.

15. Lightly brush the tops of the warm sausage balls with melted butter. Do not over-saturate.
