Clean & Steam Rice

Steamed rice is a versatile meal staple.

Before steaming white rice, be sure to clean it with water to remove any debris and foreign objects. Another reason to wash rice is to remove any excess starch that is leftover from the processing of the product. When steaming the grain, be careful not to overcook or under cook it, which can result in rice that is too sticky or hard.

Instructions

1. Pre-measure the rice and pour it into a bowl filled with cool water. Stir the rice using a spoon or your hands until the water becomes cloudy.

2. Pour the rice and water into a mesh strainer over a sink. Refill the bowl with cool water and pour the rice back into it. Stir the rice once again and drain it in the strainer.

3. Fill a rice cooker with the recommended amount of rice to water ratio, such as 1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water. Double or half the amount of rice and water to make more or less product.

4. Place the lid on the rice cooker. Turn the cooker on and allow the rice to steam for 25 minutes.

5. Turn off the rice cooker. Allow the rice to rest in the cooker for five minutes before serving it.
