Use Dandelion Root Tea

Often overlooked or confused with their relatives Hawkbit and Cats' Eyes, true dandelions are natural health superstars.

Dandelions are bountiful throughout much of North America. However, they are traditionally confused with their relatives, the weeds Hawkbit and Cats' Ears. While Hawkbit and Cats' Ears are not safe for regular consumption, a true dandelion is a nutrient-rich alternative medicine superstar. Identify true dandelions by their pointy leaves, hollow stems, lack of stem hair and presence of only one flower per stem. Harvest these and grind the roots into a tea using a mortar and pestle, or purchase dandelion root tea at health food stores. Either way, steeped in boiling water, the tea has many health-related uses.

Instructions

1. Build immunity and increase your general health. Dandelions contain B complex and vitamins A, C and E. They are also a source of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc and other key minerals. Consuming these nutrients daily helps the body recover from the damage caused by free radicals and to function at its optimal capacity on a daily basis.

2. Lose weight. Dandelion root tea helps the body break down fat and can be used to aid weight loss. When using it for this purpose, drink several glasses a day and mix each cup with 1 or 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar.

3. Protect your liver. Drinking dandelion root tea regenerates liver cells and eliminates toxicity. You may drink it daily as a preventative measure. Increase your dose before and after consuming alcohol, undergoing cancer treatment, or subjecting your liver to any potential stress.

4. Reduce water retention and bloating. Dandelion tea is a powerful and safe diuretic. When consumed by women during their menstrual cycles, it relieves discomfort and puffiness associated with water retention.
