Instructions

Bread Maker Set-up

1. Place the bread maker on a counter with an outlet close by, but don't plug it in yet. Make sure the top of the bread maker can be opened easily without hitting cabinets.

2. Open the bread maker's lid to remove the baking pan. Grasping the handle of the pan, pull it up. Wash and dry the pan if necessary with dish soap.

3. Find the kneading blade which will be attached to the power cord in a small plastic bag. Attach the kneading blade inside the baking pan. It should fit exactly onto an attachment piece located in the middle of the bottom of the pan.

4. Set the pan to the side without placing it into the bread maker just yet.

Making the Bread

5. View your measurements at eye level to make sure they are exact.

Pour the water into the bread pan.

6. Add the butter or margarine to the bread pan. The butter should be at room temperature. If it's straight from the fridge, you can warm it up in the microwave for a few seconds, but make sure it's not too hot.

7. Add 4 cups of bread flour, making sure to not add too much. This can be done by filling the measuring cup to the brim, then tap the side of the cup with a spatula or knife to compress the flour.

8. Add the sugar, dry milk and salt to the bread pan in this exact order. Make sure to add no more than two exact teaspoons of salt, because just a little too much can affect the rising of the bread dough.

9. Use your finger to form a hole in the flour in the bread pan. Pour the yeast carefully into the hole, making sure it doesn't touch any liquid ingredients.

10. Place the bread pan into the bread maker until you hear a snap. Close the lid of the bread maker and plug its cord into the outlet. You should hear a beep, and the display will turn on with a 3:00 hour setting.

11. Press the "Crust Color" button to select desired crust. Use "Medium" for this recipe. The display should then read 1P which symbolizes "Medium."

12. Press the "Start/Stop" button, and the bread maker will start making the bread. You will be able to hear it mix the ingredients. Do not press this button anytime during the bread making process, and do not raise the lid at anytime. Your bread will be made in three hours. First the dough is kneaded (10 minutes), then it begins to rise (20 minutes) and is kneaded a second time (15 minutes.) The dough rises some more (20 minutes) and is then pressed down (30 seconds), after which it rises for the final time (55 minutes) and begins to bake (60 minutes) until its finished.

13. Open the bread maker to remove the bread using oven mitts or pot holders. Keep your face away from the lid since hot steam may escape.

14. Place the pan upside down on a cooling rack and shake it until the bread comes out. The bread might stick so you might have to use a rubber spatula to go around its sides until it comes out. Make sure the kneading blade is separated from the bread, and if not, use a utensil to remove it.

15. Cool for 15 minutes.
