Cook Corned Beef & Cabbage With A Crockpot

Cook corned beef and cabbage in a crock pot for half a day to enjoy an Irish dish.

Corned beef and cabbage are generally enjoyed on St. Patrick's Day, but you can make the meal anytime during the year. Corned beef consists of beef that has been brine-cured. The word "corn" actually refers to the corns or grains of salt used to cure the beef. Corned beef originated in Ireland and dates back as far as the 12th century. The corned beef and cabbage dish became popular in America when Irish immigrants arrived. You can make the dish at home with your crock pot to enjoy the savory combination of beef and cabbage.

Instructions

1. Place six chopped carrots and two chopped onions in a crock pot.

2. Rinse the corned beef off under cool water. Dry it with paper towels and place it in the crock pot on top of the carrots and onions.

3. Apply desired seasonings over the corned beef, such as salt, pepper, garlic powder or cumin.

4. Pour 12 ounces of beer over the corned beef. Spread 2 tablespoons of yellow mustard over the meat.

5. Combine 1/4 cup of brown sugar and 1 cup of water in a separate bowl. Pour this mixture over the corned beef.

6. Cook the corn beef for 11 to 12 hours on the low setting. Remove the corned beef from the crock pot and tent it with aluminum foil. Add eight wedges of cabbage to the vegetables in the crock-pot.

7. Cover the crock pot and cook the ingredients on high for 30 to 40 minutes until the cabbage becomes tender.

8. Cut the corned beef across the grain. Remove the vegetables with a slotted spoon and serve it with corned beef. You can serve the juices over the food if you desire.
