Repair A Leaking Moen Kitchen Faucet

Moen kitchen faucets use a cartridge-style valve assembly, instead of the ball valve assembly some other manufacturers use on single-handle faucets. Removing a cartridge does not require the intricate work a ball valve assembly requires, making the job easier to perform. Make sure when you buy a replacement cartridge that it comes with the plastic spanner tool, which looks like a white plastic block, so you can remove the old cartridge without damaging the rest of your Moen faucet.

Instructions

1. Turn off the water for the faucet by twisting the handles located underneath the sink clockwise until you cannot turn them more. If there are no handles under the sink, close the house's main water valve.

2. Remove the retaining screw, located either on the bottom of the handle or underneath a cap on the top of the faucet assembly, from the faucet's handle. Pull the faucet's handle up and off the faucet assembly and set it aside.

3. Pull off the chrome cap, then use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw holding the handle adapter piece in place. Once you have removed the adapter, clamp a pair of pliers to the plastic retainer nut and turn it counterclockwise to remove it from the faucet.

4. Pull out the metal horseshoe-shaped clip using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Insert the plastic spanner tool that comes with the new cartridge into the top of the old cartridge, then clamp pliers onto the plastic spanner tool and turn it left and right as you pull the cartridge up and out of the faucet.

5. Insert the new cartridge into the faucet in the same orientation as the old cartridge. Reassemble the rest of the faucet in the reverse order you took it apart, then turn the water to the faucet back on.
