What Are The Matched Memory Modules For The Optiplex Gx280

The OptiPlex GX280 is a server computer available from Dell and other retailers. It has a dual-channel memory system, allowing you to double its memory bandwidth. Matching memory units when adding RAM to the GX280 is vital for taking full advantage of the machine's capabilities. Matched memory modules simply refers to using the exact same type of memory in all filled memory ports on the motherboard.

Memory Module Size

The OptiPlex GX280 is equipped with 512MB memory sticks and requires adding sticks of 512MB capacity to match the modules in the unit. Conversely, you can use only 1GB sticks of RAM if you remove the original 512MB stick first.

Memory Type

The OptiPlex GX280 uses DDR2 memory. Adding DDR or DDR3 memory instead will not work.

Memory Capacity

The OptiPlex GX280 contains four total memory ports, for a maximum storage capacity of 4G of RAM if you remove the original 512 stick and replace all modules with matching units of 1GB sticks of RAM.

Memory Speed

The Dell OptiPlex GX280 supports either 400MHz or 533MHz memory modules, so only these speeds will properly match the memory modules in your computer.
