Keep Cheddar Fresh

Keeping the cheese fresh you buy from the supermarket or a gourmet shop may take preparation, but these steps will make your cheese flavor remain more fresh and true. Hard, semi-hard and soft cheeses have different shelf lives and should be treated differently. Hard cheeses may last for months if you take time to store them properly while soft cheeses may only last seven days once purchased. Cheddar is considered a semi-hard cheese and requires a couple of steps to ensure the freshness of flavor.

Instructions

1. Remove cheese from wrapper it came in from the supermarket or cheese shop.

2. Make sure your fridge is set to 38 to 45 degrees. Store your cheeses in the vegetable bin. This is a warmer zone in your fridge, but will keep your cheese in the right humidity and temperature.

3. Wrap your cheddar in wax paper or parchment paper. Then wrap the cheese in plastic wrap and store in vegetable drawer.

4. Plan to wrap your cheddar cheese in fresh wax paper and plastic wrap if you open it to serve.
