Bag Your Own Spices

Buying spices in bulk can save you money.

Bagging your own spices can help you save money by buying in bulk without expensive containers and save time by combining regularly used spices in proper proportions before you need them for a recipe. Preparing and packaging your own spices can also help you tailor your spice mixes to your personal tastes and regularly used recipes, giving you more control over the way your food tastes.

Instructions

1. Make your own Italian seasoning mix for soups, marinades and pasta recipes by combining 2 tsp. each of thyme, oregano, marjoram, basil, rosemary and sage in a food-safe, sealable plastic bag.

2. Combine 1 tsp. each of garlic powder, onion powder, white pepper, freshly ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, thyme and oregano to make Cajun seasoning for dry rubs for meat, soups, rice dishes and other Cajun recipes.

3. Mix spices in quantities you regularly use for recipes based on their amount. For example, if you commonly use 2 tbsp. garlic powder, 2 tbsp. brown sugar and 2 tbsp. onion powder for seasoning meat for barbecue, combine these spices in a small, sealable plastic bag and label them with a permanent marker by recipe.

4. Bag spices in a dark colored, food-safe plastic bag labeled with a bright-colored permanent marker to prevent light from damaging the flavor of the spices. This is particularly important if you store spices in an area where they will come into contact with sunlight.
