Measure powdered sugar for icing recipes.
Powdered sugar, which is also known as confectioner's sugar, is very finely ground sugar mixed with cornstarch. It is commonly used in recipes for icing, meringue and desserts. If you have a recipe that calls for powdered sugar measured by the pound and you do not have a kitchen scale, you can measure it in cups instead. However, because powdered sugar measures differently depending on how tightly packed it is, you need to sift the sugar to get an accurate measurement when you are using cups rather than pounds.
Instructions
1. Multiply the number of pounds of sugar the recipe calls for by 3.75 to find out how many cups of sifted powdered sugar you need.
2. Set the appropriate measuring cup in a large bowl.
3. Spoon powdered sugar into the sifter and sift it into the measuring cup. Some of it might fall into the bowl, which is okay.
4. When the measuring cup is overflowing, scrape it level with the handle of the spoon.
5. Repeat with the same or other measuring cups until you have measured the correct amount of powdered sugar.
6. Dump the powdered any sugar that fell into the large bowl back into the bag of sugar.
