Farina cereal is suitable for breakfast even for infants starting at 6 months old.
In an age of early morning fast-food and frosted toaster pastries, stovetop cooked hot cereals have an old fashioned reputation. Cooks might shy away from hot cereal, thinking it tends to cook up lumpy or is difficult to prepare. Shattering that preconception can benefit your hungry breakfast crowd nutritionally. A 1/2 cup serving of farina cereal packs 50 percent of the recommended daily allowance of iron. Dress-up a bowl of farina with sweet toppings to suit individual tastes.
Instructions
1. Add 2 cups water (or milk) and 1/2 tsp. salt to a saucepan. Bring the water and salt to a boil.
2. Remove the pan from heat and slowly pour 1/2 cup of farina cereal into the hot water, stirring constantly as you add the cereal.
3. Return the pan to the stovetop and bring the mixture to a boil. Stir the cereal as it comes to a boil.
4. Reduce heat to low and allow the cereal to simmer for four minutes, stirring occasionally.
5. Pour the cooked cereal into serving bowls. Top with brown sugar, fruit or jam.
