Instructions

Prepare the Container

1. First, buy the basket. A big wicker basket—about the size of a small picnic basket--would be a great choice. Or you might consider a plastic tub or bucket in a bright color. Type up or handwrite a card which says something like the following: "Cause I know you love to bake, here’s some things for you to make. I hope you’ll have a lot of fun--and share the treats when you’re done.

2. Line the basket with colorful fabric of some sort. You might use tea towels or a small tablecloth. Another possibility is to stop by a fabric store and pick up a yard of checked gingham or a small-patterned cotton print.

Fill the Basket

3. Include a few novelty baking items. Possibilities include miniature cupcake pans and/or loaf pans, a cookie press, printed cupcake papers, pastry brush and/or cookie cutters.

4. Add a few unusual baking mixes; you can find bags of quick bread mixes or boxes of specialty brownie mixes, for example.

5. Tuck in an assortment of small baking items such as gourmet chocolate chips, a bottle of vanilla, chopped nuts, dried fruit, food colorings, candy sprinkles and other items.

6. Put in a small cookbook devoted to one baking specialty such as pies, cookies or cakes.

7. Handwrite a card with your favorite recipe for something baked. Attach it to a note telling why you particularly like the item—or what memories you have associated with it. For example, a recipe for lemon cake with the recollection of how it was a big hit at your daughter’s graduation party, or a recipe for snowball cookies and your memories about how you and your mother used to make them together at Christmas.
