Grate Parmesan Cheese

True Parmesan is made only in the Parma region of Italy.

Caesar salad, spaghetti and countless other pasta and baked dishes just wouldn't be the same without a sprinkling of the slightly salty cheese known as Parmesan. This famous Italian cheese made from cow's milk is a staple in many households, whether it's in shredded or grated form. For the freshest tasting Parmesan cheese, however, purchase a block of Parmesan cheese and grate it over food. As it is hard cheese, Parmesan is easily grated with any type of grater.

Instructions

Microplane Grater

1. Place the end of the microplane grater on a clean cutting board and hold it at a 45 degree angle.

2. With one hand, set the cheese snug against the grater. With the other hand, firmly hold the handle.

3. Move the cheese up and down the grater repeatedly. The cheese shavings will come out the other side.

Box Grater

4. Choose which side of the grater to use depending on how fine or coarse Parmesan cheese shavings should be. This does not effect taste but it does effect presentation.

5. Place the box grater on the cutting board. It will stand upright on its own base. Hold the handle to keep it steady.

6. Grate the cheese by rubbing it back and forth over the the grater holes. The shavings will appear inside the box grater.
