A chocolate fountain is a decorative tabletop appliance that continuously circulates melted chocolate in a manner similar to a waterfall. Guests dip small pieces of food in the fountain, much in the same way they would use a fondue pot.
Considerations
Melted cheese, caramel and creamy ranch dressing also may be served in a chocolate fountain. Select foods that complement the dipping sauce you choose. Do not use foods that crumble because they can clog the fountain. Cut large foods into bite-size pieces.
Fruit
Fruits that work well with chocolate include strawberries, pineapple, bananas, peaches, pears, melon chunks, orange slices, apples or dried apricots.
Sweets
Sweet foods to choose from include marshmallows, caramels, brownie bites, cheesecake bites, lady fingers, shortbread, tiny cookies, biscotti, mini doughnuts, mini cream puffs, Oreo cookies, coconut macaroons, graham crackers, animal crackers, Rice Krispies Treats, firm pound cake or angel food cake.
Breads
With chocolate or a savory dipping sauce, try sourdough bread, bread sticks, Italian bread or French baguettes. Day-old bread works best for dipping.
Vegetables
Any vegetable that typically is served on an hors d'oeuvre platter with a savory dipping sauce will work well. Try serving asparagus, celery, carrots, bell peppers, broccoli, jicama, cucumbers or cauliflower.
