Salads are healthy fast food options.
You can select healthy choices when you are dining out or on the road. The trick is knowing what substitutions can make food more nutritious, what to avoid, and what to look for in a menu. It's important to ask about ingredients, then make logical decisions about what to eat.
Salads
Salads are healthy, but beware of what is in them. Salads with leafy greens, such as spinach are the most nutritious. Romaine lettuce is also a healthy choice, but iceberg has little nutritional value. Add tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and carrots. If meat is a must, choose grilled chicken, not breaded or deep-fried. Ask for a vinaigrette instead of creamy dressings, like Caesar, and opt for lower fat cheese like goat or ricotta.
Grilled chicken
Grilled Chicken, especially the breast, is a healthier choice than nuggets, fingers or breaded chicken burgers. Dipping sauce, mustard and ketchup are fine, but say away from mayonnaise and creamy sauces. Replace fries with a baked potato, topped margarine, instead of butter.
Veggie burgers
Burgers are a staple fast food, but when choosing them, consider, grilled veggie burgers instead of beef. Vegetarian burger have more fiber than beef, which make them much easier to digest. They are also lower in fat. Add toppers like lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and onions instead of cheese or bacon.
Subs
Stay away from pizza, meatball, bacon and ranch subs. Try chicken breast, turkey, ham or veggie ones instead. Cheese adds calories, but if you're a cheese lover ask for a natural cheese like Swiss, instead of processed ones. Consider whole wheat or a multi grain sub rolls. Substitute a fat-free condiment like honey mustard, for mayonnaise.
Stir-fried rice and veggies
Asian cuisine can tip in either direction of the health scale. All-you-can-eat-buffets with a lot of deep-fried, breaded chicken and pork are terrible, because they may have MSG, which makes people feel full faster, and then hungry once the filler wears off. A simple stir fry is better. Ask for a grilled chicken or shrimp stir-fry,. Teriyaki and soy sauce are low in fat, but still taste fabulous.
