Chex Mix

About Chex Mix

Although you can buy prepared Chex Mix in a variety of flavors today, it was originally a recipe created by Ralston Purina in the 1950s to help sell Chex cereal.

Original Recipe

The original Chex Mix recipe, which appeared in 1955, included corn, rice and wheat Chex, nuts, pretzels, bagel chips, butter, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder and onion powder.

Pre-Packaged Chex Mix

After General Mills acquired Ralston Purina, the company launched a new line of Chex Mix snacks in 1994.

Varieties

General Mills features more than a dozen varieties of Chex Mix, including peanut lovers, cheddar and barbecue. A high-end line called Chex Mix Select includes specialty flavors like chocolate turtle and sweet-and-salty trail mix.

Nutritional Information

According to General Mills, prepared Chex Mix contains 40 to 60% less fat than potato chips. However, most varieties are high in sodium.

Healthier Options

Chex Mix now comes in "100 Calorie" packs to help control snack portions. The packs are available in cheddar and chocolate caramel varieties.
