Become A Cake Decorator

Cake decorating combines the growing popularity of food art with the entertaining aspect of food preparation. Your talents are showing and you are ready to get further into what has only been your hobby up until now. There really is a lot of work to it-you need to learn about cake trimming, fondant, shaping and forming flowers. Are you up to the task? If so, read on to learn more.

Instructions

1. Decide where you need to start. Are you a total beginner or do you have some skills you have perfected already? Either way, you need to go forward and seek out further information.

2. Check online for an official cake decorating site. You will get valuable pointers here, especially if you want to enter into competitions. An especially useful site for novice cake decorators is Wilton Instructions.

3. Bake a practice cake. Bake the cake in the shape you have chosen. Use a stiff frosting recipe as the foundation of frosting on your cake. Frost the cake smoothly (without swirling). Next, start molding your decorations. The stiffness will afford you the right texture to create the desired shapes for your creation. Be sure to hold the pastry bag steady when working with these delicate features.

4. Investigate your local crafts or book store to see their stock of cake decorating books. The library also has easy to understand books in their catalog that educate the beginning cake decorator.

5. Search out more detailed decoration classes or books as you pass into the intermediate stage. A cake artist dedicates many years to the craft before being considered an expert.

6. Start entering competitions, once you feel you are up to the task. There are probably small shows near where you live. Another idea is to search online for contests in the areas where you would like to vacation. After all, you can take a four day class anywhere if you don't mind paying to travel.
