Thicken Dip Bait

Dip baits use scent to attract the catfish to the hook.

A dip bait is a type of bait used to catch catfish. Catfish are attracted to strong scents. Dip baits are stink baits. A sponge, with a treble hoot, are dipped into the bait and then used to attract the fish. Many dip baits will thin as the bait is heated. Too-thin bait will dissipate in the water too quickly requiring more bait. Dip baits can be thickened by ingredients from home or found on the shore of the body of water where you're fishing.

Instructions

1. Use thickeners found in the kitchen such as flour and cornstarch. Both flour and cornstarch are used in many foods as thickening agents. Add flour or cornstarch to the dip mix as needed until it reaches the correct consistency.

2. Add food items to thicken up the dip bait. Food items can be bran flakes, bread crumbs or even saltine crackers. These items work by absorbing excess fluids in the bait, thickening the bait up. Crush up flakes and saltine crackers before adding them to the bait. These small pieces are then able to be picked up by the sponge and be part of the bait.

3. Find any nearby cattails to thicken up the bait. The head of the cattail has white, fluffy cotton like material that when added into dip bait will thicken the bait up.

4. Use cotton, such as cotton balls, cotton from a pillow or other insulating device to thicken the bait.
