Keep bananas ripe by using proper storage techniques.
At any grocery store you're sure to find a yellow, or slightly green, bounty of bananas. Whether you like them sliced up in your morning cereal or mashed and baked into a delectable loaf of bread, bananas are best served when ripe. Depending on your climate and home temperature, the rate at which the fruit ripens may vary. To avoid using browned, mushy and overly-sweet bananas, you should store them appropriately.
Instructions
1. Remove the bananas from the plastic grocery bags or distributor's packaging immediately upon arriving home. The plastic can trap natural gases, and will cause the bananas to quickly become overripe.
2. Store bananas away from other fruit. Placing them next to apples, grapes and other items in a fruit bowl will rapidly increase the ripening process.
3. Use a banana hanger to store the bunch of bananas. Suspending the bunch from a hook protects the bananas from bruising, which may damage the inner part of the fruit.
4. Place ripened bananas, which are identified by their light yellow color, in the refrigerator. Although the outer skin will become dark brown, the cool temperatures will preserve the ripened fruit inside and the inside will remain fresh.
5. Store ripened bananas in the freezer until you are ready to use them.
