Healthy Diet Snack Foods

Healthy Diet Snack Foods

When you are trying to eat healthy, it is all about choices and being prepared. Having the right types of snack food in your house and office can satisfy your cravings and hunger while maintaining your health. Unlike processed foods, many of the following food choices do not trigger the "overeat" switch. One serving can satisfy.

Almonds

A handful of almonds provide a healthy, protein-rich pick-me-up at snack time. Choose raw almonds.

Berries

Berries, especially blueberries, are high in antioxidants and vitamins and are low in calories. Mix frozen berries with non-fat plain yogurt for a healthy ice cream-like treat.

Shakes

Blend a frozen banana, non-fat milk, ice and a tablespoon of cocoa for a low-calorie mock milk shake. Freeze non-fat plain yogurt in ice cube trays, and add them to the mix for a rich-tasting shake.

Fruit/Vegetables

Raw fruit and vegetables are always an ideal snack food. Fruit satisfies sweet cravings, while vegetables satisfy the desire for something crunchy. Raw, whole fruit and vegetables take longer to digest, thus satisfying hunger longer than when processed, juiced or cooked.

Salty

A couple of stuffed green olives will help satisfy the craving that drives dieters to consume salty chips. A few green olives provide good monounsaturated fats to the body.

Mixes

Mix a small box of raisins with a few nuts for a sweet and salty treat. A couple of prunes can be substituted for the raisins.

Eggs

At a little under 100 calories, the hard-boiled egg provides a wallop of nutritional value and satisfies hunger pangs.
