Types Of Shiraz Wine

Types of Shiraz Wine

The Shiraz grape is widely grown in Australia and has become popular in South Africa. Types of Shiraz wine are determined by growing region, where the uniqueness of soil and climate contribute to the distinct character of the finished wine. Add this to my Recipe Box.

Barossa Valley

Australia's Barossa Valley produces robust and concentrated Shiraz wines. Shotfire Ridge Shiraz exemplifies the region with its rich flavors of blackcurrant, smoked meats, chocolate and oak.

McLaren Vale

McLaren Vale produces Australian Shiraz wines similar to Barossa in texture but with lighter body and color. The Dead Arm Shiraz typifies the McLaren Vale region with its bright flavors of anise and cherry.

Hunter Valley

The warm climate of New South Wales' Hunter Valley creates a soft textured Shiraz wine embodied in the raspberry and vanilla notes found in the local Brokenwood Shiraz.

Heathcote

Victoria's Heathcote Shiraz wines are similar to the Syrah wines of France's Rhone Valley due to cooler climate. Craven's Place Shiraz of Heathcote is refined and complex, with subtle notes of lavender, violets and blueberry.

Adelaide

Shiraz grapes from Adelaide receive abundant sun and produce the sweetest type of Shiraz wine. Leabrook Estate Shiraz embodies the region with its floral tastes and aromas of sweet lilac and mint.

South Africa, Cape Region

South African Shiraz wine is similar to the robust Australian type, with deep purple coloring, concentrated fruit and aromas of smoke and clove. Fish Hook Shiraz, produced in the Stellenbosch region, exemplifies this full-bodied type of Shiraz wine.
