Curry powder is a blend of spices, herbs and seeds. It is a key ingredient in many Indian, South Asian and Caribbean dishes. You can also use curry powder in cooking and add a unique flavor to many of your favorite dishes with these simple tips.
Instructions
1. Make your own curry powder blend to add flavor and heat to any recipe. Most curry powder blends contain cumin, coriander, ginger, red/black pepper, dill seed, cardamom, cinnamon, turmeric and cloves. Some blends can have up to 30 different spices or herbs. Create your own special blend by combining any of the above ground spices and use as a rub for poultry, meat or fish before cooking.
2. Use curry powder in a marinade sauce for meats or seafood. In a bowl, combine these ingredients: salt, curry powder, finely diced tomatoes, onions, minced garlic, pepper and barbecue sauce. Place the meat or seafood in the marinade and refrigerate for at least an hour before cooking or grilling.
3. Create an easy stir-fry curry dish with leftover cooked chicken in a few minutes with this recipe. In a bowl, combine chicken broth, cornstarch, curry powder, soy sauce and pepper, stir and set it aside. Heat some oil in a wok and add diced onions and minced garlic and fry lightly, then add broccoli and diced carrots and continue to stir fry for a few minutes. Remove the vegetables from the wok when cooked thoroughly then add oil, cooked chicken and the liquid curry powder / broth mixture; let this thicken, add the vegetables again and serve with rice.
4. Concoct a zesty chicken salad by using curry powder. In a bowl, dice some cooked chicken and add chopped celery, onions, apples and toasted pecans. Then add raisins, pepper, curry powder and mayonnaise, mix well and serve.
5. Add curry powder to vegetables, soups, stews, meatloaf or burgers for a unique combination of heat and intense flavor.
