Save time by making sausage balls in advance for a party or dinner.
Sausage balls make a great appetizer or compliment to a main course. While this dish is not particularly time consuming, if you are making sausage balls for a dinner or party, completing these ahead of time will be well appreciated when you are busy getting everything else ready. When the time comes, all you will have to do is heat them up and serve them with your favorite dish or sauce.
Instructions
Preparing the Sausage Balls
1. Combine the sausage, baking mix, cheddar cheese and salt and pepper. Mix with your hands until all ingredients are thoroughly combined. Shape the mixture into 1.5-inch balls and set aside.
2. Preheat skillet on medium high heat and spray lightly with cooking spray. Add the sausage balls to the heated pan in a circular pattern working from the inside out. Cover the skillet and allow the meat to cook for three to four minutes.
3. Remove the lid and turn the balls over to their other side. Re-cover the skillet and continue to cook the meat. Repeat the process until the sausage is completely cooked and browned on all sides, about 20 minutes.
4. Remove the sausage from the skillet and place on paper towel to pat off excess grease. Allow the sausage balls to cool slightly for about five minutes and place them in an airtight container. Place the lid on the container and store it in the refrigerator.
Reheating the Sausage Balls
5. Remove the container of sausage balls from the refrigerator and place it in the microwave for two minutes.
6. Take the container out of the microwave and rearrange the sausage, moving the balls from inside to outside and the reverse. Place the container back in the microwave and continue to heat on one minute intervals, moving the meat around in between heating, until they reach the desired temperature.
7. Remove them from the container and place them on the serving tray once the sausage balls are heated to an acceptable temperature. You can compliment this appetizer with a honey-mustard or barbecue sauce. These also can be served as a compliment to a main course like pasta and marinara sauce.
