Make this party a night to remember.
In the past, a 60th birthday party was a solemn occasion that was celebrated a person's transition into old age and the trappings of being elderly. Today, a 60-year-old is viewed as a vibrant, active senior who still has a lot of life ahead of them. Throw a 60-year-old in your life a party he or she will remember for many years to come.
Invitations
The 60th birthday is generally the birthday that many consider to be the official start of old age, so construct invitations that humorously center on this theme. Cut out the shape of a coffin from a piece of white card stock. With a black pen or felt tipped marker, write down that a one foot in the grave party will be held for the birthday boy or girl. Also write down other pertinent information for the event, such as the date, time and location of the party. Draw a picture of a severed foot on the bottom of the invitation. Crush a few chocolate sandwich cookies to represent dirt. Fill a small box with your "dirt" and place the invitation inside. Repeat this process for each invitation and address the boxes to their intended recipients.
Decorations
Use the number 60 and the decade of the birthday boy or girl's birth as a theme for the decorations. Fill the room with 60 balloons of his or her favorite color. Cover the tables with table cloths and purchase plastic plates, cups and cutlery in his or her favorite color as well. Place memorabilia from the decade and year of the person's birth. For instance, rock and roll was just beginning in the 1950s, so cover the room with old vinyl records, posters of famous musicians of the day, such as Elvis Presley, and rent a jukebox that plays music from this decade. Place posters of the birthday boy or girl's favorite films of this decade on the walls.
Games
Playing games at the party will keep the guests occupied. Have a dance contest that is set to music of the 1950s. Before the day of the party, write down several trivia questions about the birthday boy or girl's favorite films, television shows and about his childhood. Ask the guests at the party these questions and whoever answers them correctly wins a prize, such as a bag of candy, a DVD or a gift card if the question is particularly tough.
Cake
Continue the birthday boy or girl's birth year as the theme for the cake as well. Construct a cake from the numbers of the year he was born. Place the cake on a large piece of cardboard that has been covered with aluminum. Set the entire piece on a table and encircle the cake with 60 stick candles that are placed in candle holders.
