Make Homemade New Orleans Shrimp Cocktail Sauce

Make Homemade New Orleans Shrimp Cocktail Sauce

As any native of New Orleans will tell you, the idea of purchasing pre-made cocktail sauce is akin to blasphemy. In less then five minutes, you can make your own cocktail sauce, and it'll be the best you ever had. Although cocktail sauce is traditionally used for boiled shrimp in most parts of the United States, in New Orleans it is used for a variety of seafood, including boiled shrimp but also raw or fried oysters, fried shrimp and fried catfish.

Instructions

1. Put 1 cup of ketchup in a soup bowl.

2. Add 1 tbsp. horseradish to the ketchup. The horseradish gives the cocktail sauce its kick (and its texture). The ratio of 1 tbsp. horseradish to 1 cup ketchup is recommended, but you can kick it up a notch by adding more horseradish.

3. Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into the mixture.

4. Add a dash of Worcestershire sauce to the mixture.

5. Add a dash of hot sauce to the mixture.

6. Add salt and pepper to taste.

7. Stir the mixture rapidly with a fork until all the ingredients are mixed well. If the mixture seems too watery, add a small dab of horseradish to help thicken it up.
